Labelexpo India 2014 set to be a record show

The seventh edition of Labelexpo India, South Asia’s premier label and package printing exhibition, returns to Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from Oct 29 – Nov 01, 2014 and the show will be bigger than ever before. Covering 5,800 sq m area, Labelexpo India 2014 will feature around 250 exhibiting companies including over 50 first time exhibitors. HP@Labelexpo 2014

At Labelexpo India 2014, HP will showcase the HP Indigo WS6800 Digital Press, the third generation of the best-selling HP Indigo WS6000 Digital Press series, which offers breakthrough productivity, versatility and advanced colour management. Delivering the industry’s highest crossover point in narrow-web production versus analog for the vast majority of pressure-sensitive label jobs, the press will help support the rapid increase in volume of digitally produced labels.

The HP Indigo WS6800 helps customers reach new levels of productivity and reduce time spent preparing colour profiles and PANTONE colour matching by up to 75 percent with a new in-line spectrophotometer. Using closed-loop control, the spectrophotometer eliminates the need for manual colour calibrations and adjustments. An expanded frame width, increased from 317 mm to 320 mm, allows for higher press output and reduced costs. In addition, label converters can produce up to 131 linear feet per minute in colour using Enhanced Productivity Mode (EPM). Providing improved efficiency in the converting of shrink sleeves, high-slip HP Indigo ElectroInk White reduces production steps with single pass sleeve production. HP Indigo ElectroInk Silver gives labels a metallic look similar to UV flexo silver inks and can be used as a spot or base colour on a range of label applications, including paint, automotive, household chemicals, nutraceuticals and soft drinks.

The HP Indigo WS6800 also supports the HP SmartStream Labels and Packaging Workflow Suite 4.1, powered by Esko. Esko completes 100 installations of Full HD Flexo

Brazil-based Clicheria DP Studio has recently upgraded its investment in digital flexo imaging from Esko HD Flexo to Esko Full HD Flexo, becoming the 100th installation, worldwide. DP Studio is reporting exceptional package printing results – even replacing gravure at times. HD Flexo, with nearly 1,000 installations, brought to flexographic printing a quality level that could previously only be achieved with offset or rotogravure printing processes. It evolved to become the new standard in flexography. The impact on the label and packaging industry of HD Flexo cannot be underestimated. Brand managers now have the option of producing shorter runs of packaging and labels more affordably, and in a more environmentally friendly manner, without any compromise in quality, giving them more freedom in terms of production technology.

Building on that, Full HD Flexo has grown in popularity and is quickly becoming the flexo quality standard for more applications and more substrates. “Esko Full HD Flexo, a 2014 Printing Industries of America InterTech Technology Award recipient, is being quickly adopted throughout the world,” told Thomas Klein, vice president Flexo Business at Esko. “Launched just 18 months ago, a hundred customers worldwide have already adopted the technology to achieve excellent – and at times, award-winning – flexo print quality results. “With Full HD Flexo we broaden the range of substrates and applications upon which flexo printing can truly compete against any other print process. Enhancing the Colour Gamut in Print

Multicolour printing is generally associated with printing with four process colour inks namely CMYK. Sometimes it also uses additional Pantone shades, to produce a colour shade that is not reproducible using the CMYK process colours. This system has been in use for many years and is still in vogue. In many cases, higher density inks have been used to improve the printing of process colours by using higher density inks to produce the richer/darker colours. Though this helps to improve the richness of the colours, it makes the highlights darker in print which can sometimes be drawback.

There have been attempts to improve the printing of process colours by using the Hexachrome* system of printing six colours namely CMYKOG which came in very powerfully, but somehow never gathered momentum.

Thereafter a system called OPALTONE* came in with improved capabilities. Over the years the team at OPALTONE has worked very hard to improve its performance, in more ways than one. The present system is fully equipped to help the printer get full benefits, by using this system. Of late, there has been a lot of interest in creating awareness in following the 7 colour system of printing, with a consortium of companies coming together to focus on this system, now known as the REVO project. I think this is a good move as it will benefit the printers, substantially, to follow this system of 7 colour printing, as a standard practice.

This principle of 7 colour printing was introduced quote some time ago, even before the focus provided by the REVO project. It is therefore possible use a similar process, independently of the companies of the consortium and a printer is free to choose the partners he wants. With slight modifications, using the 6 or 7 colour system as a standard can help eliminate the need to change inks on the print stations of a press. Using this system in conjunction with the GTT metering rolls, will reduce the press downtime for make ready, thereby providing more time to produce on press. This can reduce cost of production and improve the overall production of the flexo press with improved colour gamut.

The best part of the system is that it gives the pre-press department, the ability to convert the RBG/CMYK image into separations for CMYRGBK, within no time, that enhances the Colour Gamut reproduction which is very easily seen on the monitor itself. This is the only software, I have seen, that can do this without batting an eyelid. Earlier we used to spend hours in trying to prepare a separation for printing a Pantone* shade to combine with the CMYK image, by manipulating the CMYK image separations. The system also allows you to edit the separations, to an extreme, that I have not seen before. Also the editing functions are simple and easy to manage. The improved Colour Gamut that one sees on the monitor can be easily reproduced using the defined set of inks, information on which is provided by OPALTONE*. It also improves the appearance of the metallic colours like gold and silver which is really amazing. The use of the ink suggested by OPALTONE can also be used as standard for printing of all jobs, irrespective of the printing process or substrate used. The essence is to use a good white substrate with the standard set of inks.

The OPALTONE* system produces a wider Colour Gamut in print that was not earlier possible and also helps to eliminate the use of Pantone shades in print. In fact it can produce a higher range of shades than the pantone range. There is a possibility of reducing the number of colours printed from 7 to 6 or 5 or 4, depending on the dominating colours in an image. This reduces the cost of production for the printer while enhancing his capability.

Heidelberg focuses on digital label segment

World premiere - Stefan Heiniger, COO of the Labels division at Gallus, Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach and anchor investor Ferdinand Rüesch, start up the new digital printing system for label printing, the Gallus DCS 340.Heidelberger Druckmaschin en AG (Heidelberg) is set to launch a new digital press for the growth market of digitally printed labels. This represents the next milestone in the company’s strategic realignment, particularly in terms of significantly expanding sales in the digital sector over the medium term.

The rapid progress in rolling out the digital strategy shows that the partnerships Heidelberg has nurtured with various suppliers are proving highly successful when it comes to developing new digital printing systems for industrial applications. For example, the Gallus Group, which was recently taken over in full by Heidelberg, has held a customer event to present the forthcoming Gallus DCS 340 (DCS = Digital Converting System) digital label printing press, which is based on inkjet technology from Fujifilm. Heidelberg and Gallus jointly developed the digital production system for industrial label printing in less than one year. Heidelberg is to manufacture the inkjet unit at its Wiesloch-Walldorf site, while the flexo and converting units for the new press will be produced at the Gallus plant in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The system is slated to enter series production in the coming year and will meet growing demand for the costeffective production of short, medium, and versioned runs in label printing.

Heidelberg and Gallus jointly developed the Gallus DCS 340 digital label printing press in less than one year. It is designed to meet growing demand for the cost-effective production of short, medium, and versioned runs in label printing.“We are pursuing a growth strategy in our digital printing operations,” says Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. “Today, less than twelve months after we started our collaboration with Fujifilm, we can stand alongside Gallus and unveil the first print-ready system. The only way to rapidly leverage growth potential in digital printing is through partnerships. This helps us get a lot closer to our medium-term sales targets in the digital sector.”

Having completed its takeover of Gallus Holding AG in the summer, Heidelberg has reinforced its commitment to the growth segment of digital label printing. Ferdinand Rüesch, former owner of Swissbased Gallus Holding AG, supports the strategic realignment that Heidelberg is pursuing.

The newly unveiled digital printing system has been designed for the self-adhesive labels market. The global print volume for these labels is growing by around four percent a year. Although only around five percent of this volume is printed digitally, this figure is rising rapidly. Indeed, digital printing is driving change in this highly promising market segment. It is anticipated that, in the medium term, just under half of the presses sold in this sector will be digital. By launching this new technology, Heidelberg and Gallus will be actively shaping change in the business models used in this segment and offering users a versatile and cost-effective solution.

“Heidelberg has reached another milestone in its realignment in the digital sector. The next steps to develop additional digital printing systems as part of the collaboration with Fujifilm are already being taken,” says Linzbach.

Nutech Packagings orders India’s first 7-Colour Heidelberg New Speedmaster CD102 Carbon Neutral Press

Noida based Nutech Packagings has made history by ordering India’s first 7-colour Heidelberg press. The New Speedmaster CD 102-7+ LX-combi press equipped with closed loop colour management systems is an all-rounder machine for a wide variety of applications in the 70 × 100 format. It features stable print quality, excellent stability in operation, and outstanding net productivity. The Preset Plus Delivery and attractive equipment packages offer far higher performance levels.

Jatinder Shroff, director, Nutech Packagings said, “The machine would be installed early next year.”

Klaus Nielsen, managing director, Heidelberg India, who was also present at the premises of Nutech Packagings, remarked that they are very excited about the first order of such machine from India which will no doubt meet the expectations of Nutech. The new Speedmaster complement their new facility as they can benefit on a daily basis from the outstanding energy efficiency of the machine. This will be the first CO2 neutral press in the country.

Highcon launches feature-rich digital cutting and creasing machines

Highcon recently launched the Euclid II series of digital cutting and creasing machines. This second generation of machines incorporates several new features, the result of valuable production input garnered from Euclid customers around the world. The Euclid II series of machines includes the following new optional add-ons like Highcon Integrated Digital Stripping Unit, which is a built-in waste stripping mechanism that automatically removes the waste from the smallest internal cutouts, eliminating the need to buy, setup or store a separate stripping tool.

Variable data printing on foil substrates made simple…

Graphic designers find it nearly impossible to incorporate variable data in a foil area to be overprinted with CMYK inks, because a separate white ink mask need to be created manually for each data variation. With Color-Logic software, however, white ink masks are created automatically as the file is processed. The proprietary Color-Logic process permits designers to incorporate variable elements throughout a design-from simple personalised text to more complex variables such as sequential numbering and variable images. Successful German premiere for KBA’s new compact platform automation are

The compact EVO XDs/n press platform was developed by KBA-Flexotecnica in Tavazzano, near Milan, for the growing segment of smaller print runs in the flexible packaging printing market. The new EVO XDs/n series from KBA-Flexotecnica are extremely compact and in terms of automation are aligned for increasingly smaller print runs. Koenig & Bauer Group (KBA) has recently announced the successful German market premiere of this new platform as Strubl KG in Wendelstein, near Nuremberg, opted for an eight-colour press from the EVO XDs series with a print width of 1,000 mm (39.3 in).

This new press will be fired up in spring 2015. The new EVO XDs/n series from KBAFlexotecnica address the ongoing trend within the flexible packaging market towards smaller print runs with more frequent job changes. The main difference is the EVO XDs’ print width of 600 to 1,000 mm (23.6 – 39.3 in) and 1,100 to 1,200 (43.3 – 47.2 in) for the EVO XDn. When developing this new press platform, the engineers at Flexotecnica placed great importance on an attractive price/performance ratio and high cost efficiency. The EVO XDs/n platform’s energysaving drive technology also contributes to this. AIF (auto impression setting system) automatic printing pressure adjustment and ARF (automatic image positioning detection) automated register setting keep start-up waste to a minimum. Two days national workshop on ‘Printing & Packaging Business Management’

A two-day national workshop on ‘Printing and Packaging Business Management’ was organised by Institute of Mass Communication & Media Technology, Kurukshetra University from September 13-14, 2014. Delegates from printing and packaging industries and academic institutes participated in this workshop. Some of the delegates represented companies like HarperCollins, Pitney Bowes, Ricoh, Accenture, GJU, Hisar, etc. The main motive of this workshop was to make the students of BTech (Printing, Packaging) aware of the modern trends and techniques in printing and packaging industries.

In this workshop, Prof SS Boora, director, IMC&MT, highlighted the speedy growth of the printing and packaging industries in the overall Indian economy. Prof Boora said that keeping in view the demands of the coming times, the structure of academic courses should be designed according to the industries. To enhance this goal, Prof Boora stressed on the need to start capsule courses by the printing & packaging academic institutes.

Kanwardeep Sharma, convener of this two-day national workshop, said that such interactive and educative programmes should be organised from time to time so that people from the industries and the academy should get opportunities to work together. Amit Sharma, GM-production, HarperCollins Publishers India, emphasised the need of having technically equipped printing engineers in the industry. He told that printing business is third in the Indian trade and the opportunities available in this business have been constantly increasing. While, Vishal Sharma, associate principal-Media Technology, Accenture Gurgaon advised the students to develop their technical skills and prepare them for the future jobs.

Neeraj Jagga from Pitney Bowes, said that the quality of printing has also improved due to digital techniques. He further said that e-publishing is being widely used due to new information technology. He added that e-publishing should be taught as a subject in all printing institutes of India. While, Hitender Kumar from Ricoh also gave his sincere advise to students to keep update themselves with new generation printing technologies.

On the second day of this workshop, a competition was held among the students of North India. The students gave presentations on the challenges and scope of printing industry in India. The prize for the best presentation was given to the team of Department of Printing, GJU, Hisar and the second prize was given to Department of Printing, Kurukshetra University.

Parksons Packaging to produce corrugateD carton trays
- installs India’s first Kongsberg V sample-maker

India’s leading monocarton company— Parksons Packaging has diversified into the production of SoliQ branded corrugated carton trays under license from BillerudKorsnäs (Sweden). Designed specifically for fruit and vegetables, the special SoliQ marked corrugated boxes are manufactured according to stringent quality standards ensuring that the contents are protected throughout their supply chain.

Parksons Packaging’s diversification into this new vertical of branded corrugated cartons, means investing in new equipment for corrugation, multi-colour flexographic printing and slotting and creasing at the Chakan plant in Western India. However, its design and sample-making infrastructure was already in place, Parksons is a long-time user of Esko software including ArtiosCAD for the structural design of folding cartons.

According to Parksons’ chairman Ramesh Kejriwal, “The Esko prepress system with ArtiosCAD software helped us in building our packaging design facility into a vibrant innovation centre called DESIGN PARK.” The diversification from offset to flexography and the change from folding cartons to printed corrugated trays have been smooth because of the familiarity and confidence in Esko software tools and sample making hardware. Parksons Packaging was the first Indian packaging converter to install a Kongsberg XL series sample maker when it was launched in 2001. Having found the first Kongsberg XL most reliable, the saga of trust has continued with Parksons’ installation of the newly launched Kongsberg V20 sample making table for the new diversification project.

“The new sample maker was essential because of the larger size needed for the sampling of corrugated cartons. Its immense robustness and flexibility means that it can cut and crease samples and short runs of both folding cartons and special corrugated cartons. The Kongsberg V20 can handle materials of sizes up to 1750 x 1650 mm. Its flexibility means that we can cut rubber blankets that are needed for the spot varnishing of folding cartons but we can also cut flexographic plates for mounting on our new multi-colour flexo printer slotter. Our familiarity with the use of multiple Esko sample makers at our several plant locations made it a natural progression to the Kongsberg V20 when we were contemplating sample making for the corrugation business,” added Ramesh.

With this, Parksons has the complete prepress and workflow software from Esko to drive both folding carton and corrugated carton production.

Edale and Muller Martini collaborate to cover CE Market

Muller Martini team alongside Edale’s network of agents at Edale head office in Hampshire, UKLeading UK manufacturers of narrow web flexographic printing presses and converting machinery, Edale, have formed a strategic partnership with Muller Martini, who will now be responsible for representing Edale in Central and Eastern European (CEE) markets.

Muller Martini are global leaders in the development and manufacture of print finishing systems and machines for variable size web-offset printing. This new collaboration with Edale sees Muller Martini CEE expand their range of products, creating a comprehensive web offset and web flexo press portfolio.

The Muller Martini CEE sales team recently attended an in-depth two day training course at the Edale Head office based in Hampshire, UK alongside other Edale agents. The agenda began with an overview of Edale, followed by extensive discussions on print technologies and applications in packaging. After laying expert foundations regarding Edale’s printing presses, Muller Martini had the opportunity to get hands on, changing print stations and familiarising themselves with the Edale FL-3 label and flexible packaging press.

CITO-System launches “Processline” range of measurement products

Under the brand name Processline, CITO System GmbH has launched a new range of products. This includes CITO BREYE, which is a reliable, portable measuring device that measures Braille dot width, height and spacing in accordance with DIN EN 15823. It also measures embossed or printed dots. It features Marburg Standards database, which is editable. It gives quality report in PDF file format. CITO BREYE can be used at various stages of the production process: on the embossing press, after the packaging is glued, and in the QA department.

While, creasing measurement device CITO CREASY enables one to monitor creasing characteristics, it supports during setup on the press, resulting in superior creasing and a longer service life for tooling and creasing matrices. It is a measuring device that optically records creasing characteristics and uses software to analyse these on PC or laptop. It graphically records the width, height and symmetry characteristics of the creasing and the two folding edges, analyses these and documents them by issuing a report. This guarantees optimised converting on the folding carton gluing machine. With the CITO CREASY, one can also measure impressions or monitor the angularity of assembled folding cartons.

CITO CORRCHECK is an optical, noncontact measuring system for checking the mechanical washboard effect, flute profiles in the case of open flute and the creasing process in corrugated board production. For the first time, this measuring system makes it possible to measure the washboard effect on original sheets, without having to take into account the considerable effort and cost of preparing measurement samples. Where there are deviations from the nominal values, the appropriate remedial action can be taken immediately.

The company has also launched the SpectraldenCITOmeter, which is yet another perfect device for use with the printing machine. It provides exactly those measurement functions which are needed with the printing machine, quickly and easily like: density, dot gain value, dot value, balance and Delta E 2000. Color-Logic-developer of the Process Metallic
